Windows 11 was officially released on the 5th October 2021. Normally we advise clients to keep their software as up to date as possible because updates typically offer bug fixes, security updates and new features.  

In this case, while some features in the update are welcomed, there are some issues too.  

Microsoft says that it will support Windows 10 until 2025 which gives you the option to remain on it for a while yet should you choose to. 

So should you update to Windows 11? Here are some things to consider before you make your decision. 

Top Reasons You DON’T Want to Upgrade to Windows 11 

• Bug issues! Windows 11 has had its fair share of bugs. And while these will be ironed out over time, it will take a while to get to that point. 

• If you have an older computer, consider not upgrading just yet. While there may be some workarounds – if you know what you’re doing – it may lead to reduced functionality and an interruption to your workflows.  

• There have been a few reported performance issues with Windows 11. Updates seem to have fixed most issues. However, there are some minimum system requirements that are higher than before. For example, Microsoft refers to Windows 11 as “the most secure Windows yet”, but that comes at the cost of backward compatibility. There are ways to manually install Windows 11 on incompatible systems. But in doing so, you give up the opportunity for official future updates by Windows. 

• If you love Windows 10, it’s probably better to stay where you are for now. While there are some familiar features, much has changed. With the new and unfamiliar layout, icons and navigation you will likely be less efficient in Windows 11 until you’ve taken time to push through the learning curve. For example, you can still find the Control Panel, even though the Settings app is all you need to carry out most of the functions you would need the Control Panel for. The old ‘right-click’ menu is also now hidden under the Show More options button in the new menu. 

Top Reasons You Might Want to Upgrade to Windows 11 

• If security is a priority and you always want the latest and most up-to-date security, then Windows 11 is a good fit for you. 

• If you want the latest features then Windows 11 is the version you need. Windows 11 users will be able to run smartphone-style Android apps on the Windows 11 desktop. However, despite Windows 11 being launched in October 2021, this update still isn’t available at this time (January 2022). It is likely this will now be available in beta in February 2022. 

• Windows 11 is designed for newer systems. So, if you have a new computer that came with the promise of Windows 11 then you are much less likely to run into any performance issues. 

Our view… 

For now, we recommend that most people don’t rush to upgrade to Windows 11. Hopefully, that will change over time as Windows 11 fixes issues and progresses with new updates. Hopefully, Microsoft will improve Windows 11’s features, polish the user interface, fix the bugs and tweak the user interface and features, making an upgrade a no-brainer.  And remember, opting out of Windows 11 update now doesn’t mean that you miss your chance to upgrade forever. 

If you have recently upgraded to Windows 11 and are having second thoughts, you have a 10 day roll back period to go back to Windows 10. If the 10 days have passed, it is still possible to return to Windows 10, but a little more complicated.
